Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1

Welcome to the Key Stage 1 Curriculum page.

Throughout Key Stage 1 we build on the children's previous learning from Reception. This model provides the framework for our curriculum throughout the school. We teach the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Information and Communication Technology in addition to the foundation subjects, History, Geography, Design Technology, Art and Design, Music and Physical Education. The teaching of RE is a compulsory element in the curriculum and we are required to teach to the locally agreed syllabus provided by Sutton LEA. The teaching of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is a crucial element in our curriculum and we follow Local Authority guidelines for this also. Wherever possible, the subjects are taught through topics, which provide quality time for children to learn and to express their ideas through different media.

The organization of the curriculum gives us a systematic approach to the teaching of key skills for basic Literacy and Mathematics as well as the application of Information Technology. We provide a wide range of learning situations i.e. individual, paired, supported, independent, group and class work and cater for different learning styles so that differing needs of the children can be met, ensuring full access to the curriculum for every child. We arrange for numerous special events which stimulate the interest of the children. Visits from storytellers, authors and musicians, themed weeks such as Arts or Book Week, class outings to local venues or further afield are all encouraged and carefully planned to be part of the children's learning. Information about school events and curricular activities is circulated to parents in newsletters which are sent home each half-term.

 Reading Schemes

We use a range of reading schemes at our school including the Oxford Reading Scheme, Big Cat Phonics and Rigby Star.  We use a range of books for each stage to provide a broad and rich readng experience.

Phonics

Phonics is the knowledge of letters and the sounds they make.  At our school phonics is taught through the 'Letters and Sounds' Programme.  The children are taught the skills of blending sounds together to read words and segmenting the sound of the words and choosing the correct letters needed to spell it.  The children work on the 'Letters and Sounds' Programme from phases 1-6.
