Role of the Governing Body

 

Cheam Common Infants’ is a community school with a governing body of 11 members, made up as follows:

- 1 LA governor,
- 5 co-opted governors,
- 3 parent governors
- 1 staff governor
- 1 Headteacher

The Governing Body has a key role in ensuring that we provide the best possible education for all our pupils. It essentially works strategically in the background, whilst leaving the day to day management of the school to the Headteacher. Together, they agree the aims and conduct of the school, ensuring that the pupils have a full entitlement to the agreed curriculum and managing the school within its allocated budget. It is the governing body that is accountable to the parents and the wider community in ensuring that the standards upheld in the school are of the highest quality.

Our governing body has a strong focus on 3 core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils – and the performance management of all staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

All of our governors usually serve a term of four years and their services are all provided voluntarily. The work they do requires commitment, but it is extremely rewarding. Membership of the governing body changes constantly, either through the expiry of terms of office or resignations forced by individual circumstances. The school strongly encourages parents to consider becoming a Governor and the local authority provide a continual system of training and support for all governors.

The Governing Body delegates some of its responsibility to its sub-committees. At Cheam Common Infants’ School, these committees are as follows:

Curriculum Committee – Chair, Rebecca Timmis

- considers the learning and other experiences the school provides for our pupils that relate to curriculum. Ensures that high standards of educational achievement and assessment are achieved at all times.

Personnel Committee – Chair, Athar Khan

- responsible for the Pay Policy, staffing decisions and performance management.

Finance Committee – Chair, Paul Brione

- responsible for all areas of finance, recommending the budget to the full Governing Body and ensuring value for money is achieved.

Premises Committee – Chair, James Gore

- provides guidance on all matters relating to the school’s premises and grounds, security and health & safety.
