Geography

Developing the children's geography skills and knowledge allows them to interact more effectively with their local and wider communities. 

They are provided with opportunities to research, compare and contrast their surroundings with other places. Local Field trips to our Forest School,  the High Street, and further afield. Our geography teaching also includes helping children to come to an understanding of how people live and work in third world countries.

 

Design Technology

At Cheam Common infants’ Academy we follow the ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ approach to the teaching of DT, as outlined in the National Curriculum Programmes of Study document. From an early age we enable children to be inventive in designing practical solutions to everyday problems. Some of this work may arise from needs created in imaginative play, whilst other work will be an integrated part of the planned Topic. They are taught to design, make and evaluate their own models. Children are encouraged to use all tools and equipment safely.

 

Religious Education

We follow the London Borough of Sutton's Agreed Syllabus for RE.  We encourage our children to develop an understanding and respect for the beliefs, values and practices of people throughout the world. During their time at Cheam Common infants’ Academy, they will learn about Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism.  They explore the influence of beliefs, values and traditions on individuals, and communities. We invite external speakers to lead assemblies to share knowledge and experience and celebrate the diversity of our children by recognising different faith’s festivals and we visit places of worship in the community.

 

PSHE

We have introduced a whole school PSHE scheme called Jigsaw. Jigsaw combines PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. It is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. There are six Puzzles which are studied as half-term units of work. The programme aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
